Horse Care, what is it?

Horse care is not always easy. Some times it is not fun, but for the most part, You will love it!

Always remember if you’re unsure, ask questions. Find someone who has been around Horses a little bit longer. A family member or a friend at the local stables and ask them, anythingWith Horses, you never stop learning!


Your Horse requires routine daily care for their health and well-being. A typical Horse care routine consists of:

  • Feed your Horse in the morning and at night.
  • Clean their water buckets and refill them in the morning and at night.
  • Muck-out (clean) their stall and replace your Horse's stall bedding as needed.
  • Groom (clean) and check your Horse's hooves daily and make sure that dirt, stones and manure are picked out.
  • Remove any cold weather blankets or rugs as needed so your Horse doesn't overheat.
  • In the summer months, spray your Horse with fly spray in the morning and evening.
  • Turn your Horse out to a pasture daily for exercise so they can stretch their legs, roll, and enjoy the sunshine.
  • Exercise your Horse a minimum of three times a week with ground work and/or riding.
  • Bathe and completely inspect your Horse.

Horse care includes caring for their their health, their stable and their tack. Your Horse should be brushed daily and given a good look over to see if they have any injuries or any health issues.  If your Horse can find a way to injure itself, it usually will!

Stable chores include mucking stalls, sweeping isles and removing cobwebs from the ceiling. Leather tack should be cleaned and conditioned regularly to keep it soft and comfortable for your Horse. Your saddle pads need to be cleaned regularly, so dirt and sweat don't build up.
